Navigation Menu Debate

Looks like my entry about navigation bar preference –on the left of your Web site or the right — has started up a little bit of a debate. I love to see it because hey, I am not the official rulemaker of menu making. I like seeing both sides of view.

Here is what John had to say on the issue at hand:

I enjoy reading your stuff. It always provides another perspective on a lot of things, but not too unlike my own.

Anyway, today’s article was interesting and I guess it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. I’m developing a site for our community using the Joomla CMS system. We looked at a number of templates and had a fair amount of discussion on which side the menu should be. Now, keep in mind that this is not a commercial site and we are not necessarily interested in being ranked on search engines. We are, however, interested in providing ease of operation to the folks in our community.

Given that we here in the States learn to read from top to bottom of the page and from left to right, we thought, like you, that the content should be to the left. When I made a presentation to the Web committee, and several other informal presentations, all asked if the menu could be moved to the left side of the page. Thank goodness for CSS and good, structured code. Yes I could, and did move the menu to the left side of the page, and just about everyone likes the menu on the left side of the page. Interestingly, the two comments that I got asking why we moved the menu came from IT types like myself and thought that it should be on the right side. I wonder why it is that those of us in the IT world seem to like the menu on the right side, while others seem to like it on the left.

I like seeing intelligent debate on issues without anybody having to go to the gutter for their argument.
