Find A Backup Method That Works

The secret to backing up is to find a system that works for you and not against you. Yes, I don’t mean to toss a wrench into anybody’s day, but you must back up your Web site as well. Backing up is never a fun thing to do — but with the recent news last week of Business 2.0 and its loss of an entire issue of the magazine it produces, I thought this might be a good subject to bring up.

Now I don’t know anybody that starts jumping up and down for joy when it comes to backing up time. Many people ignore the need till it is too late. The truth is it doesn’t have to be that bad. You need to just slip backing up your Web site into your weekly or daily grind. Have some free time on the weekend? That is a perfect time to back yourself up. Just tell yourself you are going to do it every Saturday morning before the good cartoons start coming on. Don’t let yourself slip — or you’ll be less likely to do it next week.

If your Web site’s files do not change, or are non-dynamic — then you have less to worry about. For you, all you need to do is back up everything each time you change something. With the world of MySQL databases and publishing content several times a day, backing up isn’t always the easiest thing to do. I also wish there were some better backup solutions built out there. We are getting wonderful Web publishing tools — but it seems like nobody is thinking about the back end.
