Are Domain Prices Going Up?

Nobody can argue with the fact that domain names are pretty cheap. I can pay $5 or less at some places Online and get my domain name registered with little or no fuss at all. TechCrunch is reporting thought that this might change in the near future.

Verisign, the domain name registry that controls the .com domain (as well as .net and others), just notified its registrars (the companies that actually sell domain names to end users) that the wholesale price of .com domains will be raised 7%, from $6/year to $6.42/year. Expect registrars, particularly discount registrars with little margin to play with, to raise their prices by roughly the same amount.

There is no doubt that this does not seem like much of a price hike right now. It is amazing though what some domain name registers can do because or their mass control over the market. Now when are you going to see this price reflected? Could be sooner than later. As the story says, other folks are probably going to follow the trend just so they can keep their costs of business evened out.

How much would you be willing to pay for your domain name?
