Texas Sized Site Planning

I have lived in Texas all my life, so I think I know a thing or two about the second biggest state in the union. When it comes to Web design, you can think of your Web site as a lot like any state out there today. When I first describe Web design to somebody who might not know, the Texas reference seems to help out a lot. Find a map and play along.

You see, the entire state would be your Web site. Some Web sites are bigger than others, and some might be smaller. Maine would be a tiny personal page compared to the Google-sized Texas. Size doesn’t really matter though (at least not in this situation) because what is inside the state is what is important.

Look at all those cities on the map. I think those would make fine examples of Web pages inside of the Web site. They are all linked together with highways and back roads. The highways would be the perfect example of links. They connect all the Web pages (no matter the size) with the rest of the content. Depending on how the highways are organized it might take you several click to go across the state, or only one. The big ones should be easily seen because they make the main navigation of your Web site.

Some states have more tourist attractions than others. These would be things that bring you traffic into your Web site. Every Web site needs a money maker and something to keep people coming in.

What other examples can you see between states and Web sites?

I use either a car or house analogy. When asked about how much a website costs, I ask them if they want a Yugo or a Lamborghini.

What Do You Think?
