Where to Get the Feed Icons?

  • No Related Post

I got an E-mail from a Lockergnome reader the other day named Tom. Tom wanted to know where he could find a good quality version of that orange RSS icon that you see on just about every Web site out there today. Well, there is no reason to search long and hard.

One sneaky way of looking for what you need would be to search in Google’s image search. We have a higher set of morals though. We shouldn’t just go steal the graphics we need, right? Well I know of one place that will offer plenty of RSS icons to go around. All you need to do is point your browser towards FeedIcons.com.

Need a certain format? They deliver you feed icon goodness via AI, EPS, SVG, PSD, PDF, PNG, JPG, and GIF. Don’t really like the orange look? Maybe purple would fit your Web site theme more? Well you are in good hands there as well. These icons can be customized to fit any color that you might need to support. Here is a little more about the icon movement from the Web site:

Mozilla Foundation recently posted usage guidelines with accompanying FAQ for the feed icon. They’ve also branded two versions of the icon as being the canonical icons - one that you see here and a smaller 14×14 version that more closely resembles the original Firefox Live Bookmarks icon. Both icons are now part of the download package offered here.

Your not just getting the icon you need, you are helping to create a standard. Don’t you feel a little more important now? I know I do.

I don’t think the RSS feed icon, in any color, is copyrighted. So there shouldn’t be any legal reason why you can’t use the feed icon you find on any webpage . The design that Mozilla produced appears to be public domain according to their webpage  http://www.mozilla.org/foundation/feed-i…), or at least available for use without restriction, which amounts to almost the same thing.

Trust me, I’ve looked into this. I know all about stealing…
