To Ad or Not to Ad?

  • No Related Post

It is a question that every webmaster must ask him or herself. Should I be running ads on my Web site or not? Well I am not going to tell you ads are evil and stay away. I am also not going to tell you to sell your soul and make as much money as you can. All I want you to do is take a look at two views and make up your mind for yourself.

For the most part, I do not like ads on Online applications that I use. If you are running a Web E-mail service, a feed reader a news group or any other Web site that could be considered more of an application - you should stay away from the ads. When you open up notepad it doesn’t give you a link to go Microsoft Office, does it? I think not.

Now where are ads welcome in my opinion? I would say just about anywhere else. As long as you stay away from the “punch the monkey in the eye” ads I think you will be doing alright. Now some people say you should build an audience first before you start delivering too many ads. There is something to be said for that. On the other hand, it would be nice to make back a little of your cash on your big opening day (that is if you expect to see a lot of visitors).

So what do you say? Are you ready for ads on your Web site or not? There is a lot to be said for both sides of the argument and I would be interested in hearing which side of the fence everybody comes down on.

I’ve placed Google ads on The Great Alaskan Red Squirrel Cam, to try and make enough money to make the site pay for itself. I’ve yet to get there and I would say for my little cam, I get a good deal of traffic. Living here on the Permafrost Ranch, means the cost of net access is high, in fact the cost of everything in Alaska is high. Imagine that. The Cam has been in place for years and I’ve enjoyed the letters and comments I get from folks who want to see a little part of Alaska that my cams allow and since placing ads on it, I’ve not had any complaints.

I agree with you on application sites, but in general I think so many of us have come to tune them out anyway. If your “ad”ding on a technology related site you’ll prolly end up with less clicks then you would if your site was about Basket weaving or homemade sushi. Eh, when “ad”ding think about your placement, and your content in relation to the ads. Whatever, I’m pretty ambivilent, as long as I am not directed to shoot the monkey, or decided whos face is on Eminems body.
