What Do These Domain Types Mean?

When it comes to managing domain names, you have three major things you can do. You can setup a subdomain. You can park a domain name and you can have an addon domain name. So what does all this jargon mean and what is the differences between each management type?

A subdomain is when you put a word or phase in front of your main domain name. For an example, lets look at mitchrocks.lockergnome.com. Now, “mitchrocks” would be a subdomain of the domain name “lockergnome.com.” A subdomain is a subdivision of a larger domain. You can usually manage and add these to your hosting account via the control panel that your Web host gives you.

A parked domain name is a little different. You could park a domain name if you had nothing else to do with the domain in question. This means it would be pointing at a “parked” Web page that usually has ads on it or a “this domain is for sale” type message.

Doing this is handy if you have an old domain name that is no longer associated with a Web site or if you just bought a domain name and do not have a Web site for it yet. You can also park a domain name on top of your current Web site as well. This would lead folks to the domain in question when they type in the parked domain name.

For example, lets say I parked mitchkeelerrocks.com on top of mitchkeeler.com. By doing this, no matter if you type in the first or the second domain - you will be lead to the same Web site.

Last, but not least, you have the addon domains. To learn more about it, I would suggest checking out the Hosting More Than One Domain article I posted a few weeks back right here on Lockergnome.com.
