Microsoft to Build Data Center in Texas

The folks over at Microsoft are set to build a new data center facility in San Antonio, Texas. The entire facility will cost around $550 million, and will cover 400,000 square feet and housing tens of thousands of computers to host their services.

This new facility will be Microsoft’s first data center in Texas I think, and it just goes to show you how they would like to stretch out a little more as far as their services go. There are a lot of things you could do with a 400,000-square-foot facility so it will be interesting to see what happens to this place once it gets up and going.

The facility will house tens of thousands of computers to host their services, such as the company’s Windows Live offerings. Constructing the facility will take about one and a half to two years. So if you live in San Antonio now I wouldn’t expect see it pop up across the street anytime soon.

From what I hear so far, this new facility should employ around seventy-five people or so. So this is good news for San Antonio, good news for those people who will get new jobs out of this, and bad news for anybody wanting to compete with Microsoft.
