Second Chances With Web Projects

  • No Related Post

Not every Web site launched or project started can be a winner. You might think you have the coolest idea, the best design, and the most wonderful content and it can fall onto the Web with a deaf ear if nobody likes it. So should you abandon that domain and start fresh? Well, hold on for a minute.

I recently went through an issue much like the one I described not too long ago. HostingHoopla.com was my project that went under and then was reborn. I had started my own Web hosting news Web site that took in all the sources I knew about and published links all in one spot. I thought it was a neat idea - but I think I was the only one. Since there wasn’t much of a fan following and I was running short on time, I had to abandon my idea and take it offline.

Now does that mean a good domain name had to die? Well, no. You see, I have re-launched my idea and made it into something a little more manageable. I also think this time around there will be more of a reason for folks to come back. You see, you should never give up because you might find out your second idea will turn out better than your first. Good ideas are hard to come by, so if lightning strikes you twice, consider yourself lucky.

Every time I see a good domain name die I get a little saddened by it all. So many ideas that didn’t “make it” end up being abandoned and bought up by link farmers. So is the way of the Web, I guess.

I just wish that it did not have to be so. I would say that a good general rule of thumb would be that once you give up on a Web site, keep the domain name for at least a year or two. If you can’t find anything else to use the domain name in that time period - then it might be time for you to sell it or abandon it.
