BlockSite

You should have the power to block any Web sites you want to block, right? The Internet browser is your window into the Online world. It should be your right to filter out what content you do not wish to see. Firefox may not come built in with too many content blocking features, but the BlockSite extension more than makes up for that.

Here is what the folks behind BlockSite have to say about it.

BlockSite is an extension, which automatically blocks websites of your choice. Additionally, this extension will disable all hyperlinks to these websites, by just displaying the link text without the clicking functionality.

This extension should by no means be used for parental control or access control purposes, just because it isn’t secure and can easily be disabled or even removed. This extension adds the site blocking functionality that was removed from Adblock Plus.

You can add and/or remove Web sites, you don’t want to visit ever again, via the BlockSite Preferences. You can open this window by clicking on the BlockSite item in the Tools menu, or by clicking on the Preferences item in the context menu of the extension in the Extension Manager.

I could see this extension being handy for parents that want to make sure their kids aren’t looking at any Web sites they are not suppose to. Of course, if the kid knows about the BlockSite extension, I am sure they will be more than able to tweak around with it as well. That is what you call a double edged sword.

This Firefox extension is for versions 1.0 and up of the browser. To pick up your copy all you need to do is download it via the Mozilla Add-ons Web site.

I installed Blocksite on FF2 but find it does nothing to eliminate unwanted search results or stop unwanted URLs from opening. Perhaps I misunderstand the concept. I want to block merchant sites like ebay and monstermarket or bizrate that come up in searches for items they have absolutely no connection to, or business with. I want to clear all those general marketing brokers off my browser so I can get down to actual mfg. It will take some time but I want to clean those phony high rate sites off my search results. Do you know of a tool that will keep this effluent off my browser?

I have discovered, while using this add-on, that URLs are only blocked if they appear exactly as typed. Including an asterisk (*) after each blacklisted site should better filter indirect references (such as a hyper link to the site, an embedded image/video, or by simply adding a forward slash and random text into the address bar to bypass it).
