Before I joined Lockergnome as a contributor almost two years ago, I did a little work in copy writing for Web sites. Most of the Web sites I worked on had something to do with Web hosting. You don’t really appreciate all that text you see on Web sites till you have to sit down and write it. It isn’t a job anybody can do. I have found some tips though that everybody from copy writers to columnist can gain something from.

Lower your expectations. The happiest authors are the ones that don’t expect much.

I couldn’t agree with this one more. No mater what type of writing you are doing, you shouldn’t set your goals too high. If you do this, then you will find your writing much more enjoyable. Toss out the rule book and practice having a conversation from your fingers to the monitor.

Pay for an editor. Not just to fix the typos, but to actually make your ramblings into something that people will choose to read. I found someone I like working with at the EFA. One of the things traditional publishers used to do is provide really insightful, even brilliant editors (people like Fred Hills and Megan Casey), but alas, that doesn’t happen very often. And hiring your own editor means you’ll value the process more.

Of course, Lockergnome has one of the best editors in the business in my humble opinion. If you can’t hire an editor or an editor seems a little silly for the work you are doing, find somebody around you to read over what you have written. They might be able to see something that you do not.
