Update Notifier

Why is it that Firefox can let you know when there is a new version of the browser available, but will not tell you when your themes or extensions need an update? This is one flaw in the Firefox system that I hope will be worked out over time. Till that day in time comes though, I have a Firefox extension that will solve your problems. The Update Notifier extension will let you know when it is time to update all those neat extra features you have plugged into your browser.

Here is what the developer of the extension has to say.

Notifies you when updates are available for your extensions and themes. Allows quick access to your extensions and themes and the ability to check both types for any updates. Easily configurable for automatically installing updates when available and checking for updates when Firefox starts.

Seems like a simple enough idea, right? If they could pack one more feature into Firefox 2 or maybe even Firefox 2.5, this would be the one that I would want. I often don’t remember to check for extension or theme updates.

Now for the folks who want to tell me that Firefox already does this, yes that is true. There is nothing popping up though and reminding me about them though built in to the regular version of Firefox.

To do is without the extension, you have to go to Tools to Options to Advanced to Update. Update Notifier saves me more than a few steps.

This Firefox extension is for versions 1.5 and up of the browser. If you want to download it and try it out for yourself, you can do so at the Mozilla Update Web site.
