Thinking of a change? Perhaps becoming an animator is the best option? I am not sold on this for myself mind you, but for the artistically inclined this might be a good option?

By 2007, the Indian animation industry will have a requirement of three lakh animators.

Post-Hanuman, the animation films are quite in demand. Including a full-fledged animated movie from B R Chopra, several other projects are in the pipe-line. But animation industry has just started attracting today’s generation as a bright career option.

“We hardly have 25,000 animators in the Indian market. In spite of the dearth of man-power, India is coming out with some very good animation films. Our country has also contributed to some of the international superhit flicks like The Chronicles of Narnia and Spider-man.

The out-sourcing work from Hollywood as well as European films is also coming to India. In such circumstances, it is one of the best career options for today’s youth.

Currently it provides one of the highest paying job profile in IT as well as the entertainment industry,” says Subhadarshi Tripathy, business head of a leading animation film production house.

Tripathy’s words are echoed by Anand Shah, an executive from a national animation school. “Looking at the demand for graphic designers and animators, India doesn’t have enough places to train people.

We need talented work force. However, in smaller cities one doesn’t get job opportunities after getting trained as an animator or a multi media professional,” he says.

A multi-media degree can offer plenty of job opportunities. “One can surely work as an animator, graphic designer, web designer and 3D or 2D animator. But in cities like Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat, one doesn’t get enough important projects,” says Mugdha Bhavsar, a graphic designer.

“Animating and animation are two different things. Good aesthetic sense and technical ability would provide the perfect combination for an animator. But here many people think of becoming animators after learning animation software.

Such people will suffer. They must take a holistic approach. However, in present circumstances one has to move to metro cities to do justice to his job as an animator,” says Manish Baradia, CEO of a leading animation company.

There are many youngsters who are now eager to take up animation as a career option. “I do not mind taking up graphic and animation designing. It has a scope for a very bright career as India is developing fast in this area,” says Jasmin Panchal, a second year college student.
