It’s absurd. Every month we have some new report coming out saying that Monday is the new best day for open or click through rate… then it’s Thursday, no wait, Tuesday, or perhaps Sunday…wait, no it’s Wednesday is the best day.
MailerMailer’s recent report said basically that Saturday through Monday provided the highest open rates. Aweber had determined that Sunday was the absolute best open rate.
While I love to read what the larger e-mail list hosting service providers determine for open rate when viewed across all of their clients…what is often lost in the data is the type of clients they have or the type of clients they used for the sample. B2B clients open e-mails very differently than B2C clients. The normal pattern has B2C members having a preference to Sunday for best open rates with B2B members favoring Monday thru Thursday for open rate.
An ezine publishing client that I was coaching told me that every time they send out an e-mail on Sunday, they get $7,000 in orders and it got to the point where they became scared to test any other day of the week for fear of not getting those orders. My advice to them was to not change the Sunday mailing but to immediately add a Thursday additional mailing. It was not the advice they were looking for when trying to determine the best day for open rate, but it was the advice that increased their monthly sales by $10K.
Conclusion: Best day of the week to mail your e-mail newsletter or e-mail marketing campaign is determined by the best day of the week that you get the most results from having tested every day of the week over a 2-3 month testing period.
If you really want to test something, try testing the TIME of day rather than the DAY of the week. You may find the time of day has a larger impact than the day of the week itself.
