Are We Still ‘The Land Of The Free’?

People who read my articles know that I like to keep an eye on things that government does that don’t necessarily reach the evening news. The Internet is a huge range of separate tools and services riding over a wide variety of hardware. As such, it takes a large number of bits and pieces to make it work.

There are also a lot of different agencies that have some say over how things are run. I haven’t decided if I think that’s good or bad. In this situation, though, there is clearly one too many on that roster. This is the story of a shadowy organization called the NTIA. It’s American, but if you read the piece I’ll reference, you’ll wonder if this is America or the Russia of the 1950’s.

The article is from a blog written by Bob Parsons. He was the man behind the Parsons accounting software of years gone by. Now, he’s the leading light that founded and still runs GoDaddy.com, the first low-price registrar in the country.

Here’s the link to his blog - and the article on why .us domains are no longer being sold with a ‘private’ registrant information feature.

Personally, I find it sad that Americans who once were proud to die for freedom, now are willing to give up that freedom for safety.
