In a world where somebody can make their mind up about you in an instant, even the organization of your Web site’s navigation is important to your success Online. The key reason is that if a visitor can not even navigate from Web page to Web page on your Web site, how are they suppose to enjoy everything that you have posted? There is hope though, learn to be better organized with your Web site’s navigation.
The first thing to remember is that less is more, at least with what is right in front of your Web site visitor’s eyes. You don’t want to confuse them with thirty different links all scrolling down the left side of your Web page.
Instead try to cluster your Web pages into groups or categories. Instead of having six or seven links telling things about you, have that link on the front page point to one page. Then call that your “About Me” Web page. With that you are already making it easier on the person viewing the Web site. They now know they can go to that one page to get everything they need to know about you.
If you have a few Web sites that require a lot of scrolling or that are very long, you might look into adding another navigation system to the top of that Web page linking down the different sections. This way you cut people’s viewing time in half. Just have the links at the top point to the different sections of content at the bottom. Now they will spend more time reading your content than scrolling up and down on the Web page.
You might also add navigation links at the bottom of the Web site as well. This way folks don’t have to scroll all the way up to go to another Web page on your Web site. I know this makes it sound like your visitors are lazy. You need to make things as easy as possible for Web site visitors though.
A site map is always a good addition to any Web site as well. By including a site map, you are giving those who are lost a road map of your Web site. Also search engine spiders love site maps, because it makes it easy for them to harvest all of your Web site’s content.
The most important thing when organizing your Web site’s navigational links is make them easy to read and find. The navigation links should be big, bold and easy to find on the Web page. Don’t hide them somewhere that I can’t find them. You might also try making them a different font type or a different color. They should stick out, not like a sore thumb, but a well placed thumb instead.
