These days, it is a wise idea to begin branding yourself in one fashion or another in order to prevent the blanket stereotyping from coming your way. Basically, it is nice to be known as different in some way.
In an article from earlier this month, the IT Manager’s Journal examines a variety of methods to make this happen. One of the best ways to get the attention you are needing for that upcoming project is to be properly branded!
Gaining market share, securing funding, and growing a business requires visibility inside and outside of the IT industry. Visibility for open source community individuals is especially problematic. Open source practitioners, traditionally are not very marketing- or PR-oriented. We feel that our work will speak for itself. Techie types aren’t exactly jumping at the chance to do presentations, go meet clients, or write compelling promotional copy, either.

Brand You is that special, personal connection you have with the customer. Your brand helps the customer remember the value of your service. A solid brand shows that you are responsible and committed for the long term. Whether you are an individual consultant, an IT executive, or a staff techno guru that personal “brand” will help boost your value and career.
