Popular public service helps people find stolen copies of their content online
TEL AVIV - Dec 16, 2004 - Copyscape today announced the Global Web Rights
campaign to help people defend themselves against Web site plagiarism. The
campaign is aimed at providing people with the tools and information they
need to fight illegal copying of their Web pages, and at raising
awareness of the global content theft epidemic.
Copyscape is a free public service used by
thousands of people every day to identify and locate copies of their
content online. Users simply enter the address of their Web page, and a
list of pages with copies of their content is shown. Copyscape’s advanced
technology can locate stolen content even if the content has been
significantly modified from its original form, leaving plagiarists with
nowhere to hide.
The Global Web Rights campaign offers useful information for people on
protecting their rights online, including a list of practical steps for
preventing and responding to Web plagiarism and links to resources for
countries around the world. For victims of content theft, Copyscape
offers a series of steps for having the offending content removed.
Copyscape also provides a public forum where users share and discuss
their experiences in dealing with online plagiarism.
“The Web is built on the hard work of honest people who devote their time
and energies to creating original content for the benefit of all,” said
Gideon Greenspan, co-creator of Copyscape. “Online plagiarism violates
people’s legal rights and discourages the creation of new Web content. We
created Copyscape as a free public service to enable people around the
world to respond to this threat.”
The Global Web Rights campaign also offers a wide selection of
anti-plagiarism banners that can be included on a site to warn content
thieves that their illegal copying will be detected. The banners are
already being shown on tens of thousands of pages across the Web
including general information sites, corporate Web pages, and blogs.
