A Couple of Tools

I think it is time to get back to the WWW. A couple of tools that you should know about are cache clearing and Ipconfig. Many of you may know about these tools, but if you are fairly new to computers, these are two tools you really need to know about.
The first tool, clearing your cache (pronounced cash) is often overlooked. Why should you use this tool? If you go to a site that uses a password for instance or one where new information is not loading in your browser, you may have a caching problem.
To clear your cache in Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then Internet Options and make sure you are on the general tab. Click the button that says Delete Files and check the box in the pop up window that asks to clear all offline content. Click OK and when the hourglass disappears your cache is cleared. At this point, I recommend you close your browser and reopen the browser all fresh and clean. Then, return to your previously troubled page and you should be able to view all the new content on your page or be able to put in your password without any more trouble.
The other tool I want to discuss is called IPConfig. IPConfig stands for Internet Protocol Configuration. This tool comes in handy for numerous occasions. One such occasion is when you get a new hardware router. Your ISP assigns an IP address to your computer. It could be something like 196.24.16.128. Most routers have a default address of 192.168.0.1. They will then assign addresses to computers that connect to them. If you plug the router up without restarting your modem and computer, the computer will never see the router which will then keep you from accessing the Internet. This is where IPConfig comes in handy.
To use this tool, click Start, then Run and type cmd and click OK. Type Ipconfig /release. This releases the assigned IP address you had previously. Once you get a prompt again, type Ipconfig / renew and your computer will be assigned a new IP address assuming the machine is configured for DHCP. Your router has assigned your computer a new address and you should be able to access the Internet. I hope these tools come in handy for you. If I can help you to better use these tools, just write to me. Take care of yourself and your computer.
