Moving Your Web Site

There are many reasons on why you could want to move to another Web hosting provider. Maybe you old one does not offer everything you need? Maybe the support went down the crapper? Maybe you were fired and refuse to host your Web site with the folks that just put you in the unemployment line? No matter the reason, moving really is not that hard. The key to it all is organization.

The folks at HostLibrary.com have done a great job at explaining everything you might need to know about the process of moving between Web hosts. The one step that I have seen the most people get hung up on is this one:

Once you have finished testing your new Web site on the temporary URL and verified it is working perfectly. The next step is to contact your current domain name registrar (i.e. the company where you register your domain name) to change the old DNS (Domain Name Server) to point to the new DNS of your new web hosting provider. Usually, the DNS information is sent to you through email after you register successful with the new web hosting provider. Alternatively, you will be able to find the DNS information from the Web site of your new hosting provider.

The reason why many people get hung up on this step is because they do not remember or know where their domain name is registered. I always recommend that you register your domain name somewhere different than your Web host. This way if you don’t like your Web host, then your not stuck having to deal with them twice. Once with trying to get your domain name back and a second time trying to get your Web site data. There are not many Web hosts that will take pleasure out of making this a headache for you, but there are some. Just be happy that you are moving away from them.

Make sure you keep good records on all your Web site’s purchases. This way you can go back and look up your Web host in your own documents. See, I told you the key to it all was organization.
