Yahoo moves from tables to CSS

To me, this is a real testament to the popularity of the CSS movement. A famous tables user, Yahoo has finally decided to make the move to a CSS layout and take down the tables once and for all.

As sad as it sounds, I have been waiting for this day a very long time. Every once in a while a large site will redesign using CSS and it will come into the Vault submissions and I always think that it’s cool to see another big one go to CSS, but in the back of mind I have always waited for the biggest one to make a move. Now it has happened. Yahoo is moving to CSS.

I understand that the redesign doesn’t work in all browsers and some people receive a message telling them how their browser is not yet supported (very 1996-like). However, keep in mind that this site is viewed over 200 million times a day and when making a huge jump like this you can’t do so without taking precautions. True your stats might only show that 1% of your viewers are using Netscape 4.7, but that 1% equals 2 million readers who will quickly move to another site taking ad revenue and shpping money with them.

What Do You Think?
