I admire people with sight challenges as I am sure it takes a lot of patience to surf the Internet relying on hearing words being read out loud. Unlike those who can see, they can’t scan a page and decide whether or not they want to continue reading. The article from OJR discusses how they view Web sites and how designers can make the surfing experience easier for them. Accessibility is not limited to lack of vision, but also to color differentiation.
With roughly 60,000 Americans turning 65 each day, we need to keep such people in mind when designing sites. It’s easier for them to get things done online then go out. 20-30 years from now might be a different story for silver surfers as they will have started using computers as a younger age than today’s seniors. The point is there are issues to consider when designing for such an audience as the Internet fails to shine for silver surfers.
