Q: I’ve discovered that you can edit the entire layout of Movable Type
by just editing the CSS file that came with it; unfortunately, I don’t
have a clue as to how to do this myself. Are there any resources that
offer CSS files?
A: Absolutely! What’s a community without sharing of ideas and styles?
I’m sure you’ve seen some stylish MT templates out there and are
astonished as to how crisp and clean they look. You can easily get the
same templates on your site by just copying some text and editing a
CSS file.
If you’re looking for crisp, clean, and easy to edit, there’s one site
that offers quite a few Movable Type styles. MovableStyle
offers many of the templates you commonly see today.
For more experimental usage, there’s the Alpha version of the Movable
Type Style Generator. Just keep refreshing
until it generates a style that you like, and download the style.
To change out styles, just go into your template manager and click on
“Stylesheets” under your Index Template, select all of the text in
that box, and delete it. Copy the text from the CSS file you downloaded
into that box, save and rebuild your pages, and you’re good to go.
This method works for both sites, and basically any site that offers a
CSS download.
Being able to simply edit the CSS file knocks off quite a bit of time
and energy in manually editing each template and uploading your own
CSS file. With this method, you can try a new style every day!
