Technology, make or break society? Part II

This is my second installment of “Technology, Make or break society”.  This one is going to be about electronics in the car. The other day I was heading to a local shop, when this guy signaled the wrong way and went into another lane, and cut me off.  I immediately thought this man has to be drunk, or impaired some how.  He was neither, in-fact he was looking at his GPS that he had sitting on the dash directly in-front of him.  This leads me to the topic, are all these fancy electronics really necessary in todays automobiles?GPS has its pluses, it helps people navigate around places they have never been before, and gives them a piece of mind that a computer is better than a map.  People also use other things in the car, like cellphones, ipods, and stereo systems with the cumbersome touch screen. I for one have taken my ipod out of my car.  It posed way to many distractions.  For one its hard to find a song while driving down the highway, and it is a pain when you drop it under the seat while driving.  I experienced this many times, and found myself hitting the shoulder of the road.  This is why I no longer take my ipod in the car with me.  I rarely use my cellphone while driving either.  It is very hard to turn and or pay attention to your surroundings while you are talking to some one on the phone.  I will not answer my phone unless its my parents calling.I for one am not a fan of all these fancy electronics in the car. Let me know what you guys think, do you use a GPS, ipod, or cellphone while driving?

I just saw my first talking box in a car last month. It was highly annoying (and I wasn’t doing the driving). It was like a nagging wife. The only thing it was missing was “I TOLD YOU not to turn there.”

What really worried me was the degree to which some people are going to rely upon them. I have seen some pretty horrid directions from online map services. I shiver to think what will happen when the Magic Box tells some poor slob to turn left (into the building) and he does it (because the box told him to).

Then he (or what’s left of him) tries to explain it to the nice policeman.

Then there’s the Microsoft systems available in Fords(?). Can you imagine having to reboot your CAR? Or pulling into a Best Buy to download updates?

No thank you.
