Technology, Make or Break Society?

This past weekend i was in church thinking about how technology is popping up every where. I look at and see huge speakers, a webcam, and a huge projector running hymns on the wall. In the back of the sanctuary is a huge “box” that has tons of computer screens and keyboards. All this technology for just a church, and no one in the church knows how to use it. It makes me wonder if all this technology necessary? Especially for a small town church that has about eighty people a week? As a matter of fact, this same church was having problems paying the heating bills a year ago, yet they bought a huge sound system. Is all this necessary? I will admit that I enjoy using my laptop, and playing my xbox 360. What I am trying to ask is technology really necessary for a small town church, or any other small corporation or business?

I sometimes think that tech actually slows down society and prevents some productivity. For example, Sears now has a phone tree and then a routing system for calls with an intermediate path through a customer service rep. So, to get the appliance department, you have to wade through the tree and then get transferred via a rep to the department you want. Somebody convinced them that this wonderful innovation would do something to improve sales, service, or their bottom line. In the end, it simply frustrates the customer and the employees.
