Do You Need Anti-Bot Software?

Symantec has released anti-bot software, which it claims provides real-time bot detection and removal by monitoring PC applications and processes. Thus, offering an additional layer of protection.
It even goes as far as to suggest that it should be used in addition to other Norton Security programs, such as Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus.
“Consumers need to know that they may be directly implicated in the criminal activities being perpetrated by botnets – if not by having their own identity or personal information stolen, then by being part of a network of zombie PCs carrying out large scale criminal activities like massive spam distribution and phishing email schemes,” said Rowan Trollope, senior vice president, Consumer Products Division, Symantec. “We’re estimating millions upon millions of bot-infected PCs in existence today, with the vast majority of these users having no idea of what’s going on behind the scenes of their own computer. Norton AntiBot is an important new tool for strengthening consumer security and stopping these insidious threats.”
Blah, blah, blah, scare, scare. This is simply FUD… fear, uncertainty, and doubt!
What it’s doing is praying on FUD and consumer fears to offer up another product that provides protection that actually should be included in its base security products like Norton Internet Security and Norton AntiVirus. But those programs are so bloated and inferior to other solutions, the only thing the company has left to work off is the uneducated consumers’ fears.
I advise that you skip the Symantec products and instead, get a copy of NOD32 AntiVirus. In conjunction with the Windows Firewall and a Hardware router, it’s all you need.

Very smart note…
Security software developers earn more and more using end-user fears of Internet threats. You’re right saying that it must be a full-packed security suite instead of set of multiple applications. I use Agnitum Outpost Security Suite on my desktop and I have no problems neither with viruses not with all that bots, trojan horses, spam, rootkits, etc. It’s a good example of security suite.

Agreed. I use Kaspersky internet security 6, a hardware router and scan twice a week with super antispyware, just to pick up what kaspersky may miss (bad cookies, adware, etc.)
Most people are tricked into purchasing inferior “paid” solutions such as Norton & McAfee. Bloated and useless.
Some of the best products are free with the exception os Kaspersky, which is paid (not that I pay it)
NOD32 is good too btw, use it on web server!
