One of the best ways to improve the looks of your home or a dull room is to give it a fresh coat of paint or change the color.

Painting is pretty simple but it’s not something that should be jumped into without the correct supplies and a little bit of preparation. Watch this video for some tips:

It’s always advisable to use plastic drop cloths instead of canvas or fabric as any spilled paint will definitely leak through. Of course, you always want to avoid any spills as the plastic drops cloths can have tears if you’re not careful with them.

Always “cut in” your room first using a paint brush. Cutting in is painting all the corners and around door and window trim so you don’t risk bumping your paint roller against other edges.

When rolling paint with a paint roller you don’t want to have a lot of paint on your roller. Always use the paint rolling pan and only put 1″ of paint in it and then roll the roller up the slanted portion to ensure that the paint is properly loaded and not dripping off. Once the roller has the right amount of paint on it, it’s helpful to start by making a letter W on the wall and then rolling up and down evenly to spread it out further.

When choosing supplies speak with the clerk at the store you’re buying the paint from. It’s important to use paint roller rolls and a brush that works best with the type of paint you’ll be using and the wall surface type. The cheapest OR the most expensive brushes are most likely not what’s best for your situation so take a moment to explain to the clerk what you’re painting; dry wall, wood, plaster, brick or other surfaces. If they’re simply reaching for the most expensive ones ask what the benefits are. Some brushes are so expensive simply because they’re easier to clean and last longer. If you’re not interested in cleaning your brushes at all you can save a little bit of money by using a lower quality version.
