Oops, you were going to paint every room but then you discovered someone hid a hole in the wall behind some furniture. Not a problem. Patching that hole isn’t that difficult.

Before you start, lay down some plastic drop cloths to catch any spackling that is accidentally dropped. The drop cloth will also make cleaning up the dust from the sanding easier.
When applying the spackling, don’t overwork it. The more you “play” with it, the worse it’ll look. You should apply it in one or two even moves and then smooth it out in one or two more. If you continue to try to smooth it out more it won’t hold to the wall as well and won’t set correctly. Wait for it to dry and then sand it smooth.
