10 Missing Mac OS X Applications

I’ve had my first Mac for just about a month now and I’m absolutely not missing Microsoft Windows in the slightest. However, I am missing some applications that are native to Windows.
I’m using the following programs in Parallels Desktop for Mac but I wish there were native Mac OS X versions of them so I wouldn’t have to use Windows at all.
- FolderShare - Microsoft acquired FolderShare but its Mac client doesn’t work on the Intel Macs anymore. Support requests to Microsoft have gone unanswered. I desperately need a way to sync specific folders on my Mac with folders on my Windows machines, like FolderShare is supposed to do.
- Google Talk - Come on Google! Why the heck don’t you have a Google Talk Client for the Mac by now?! Quit dragging your feet and get it done! I know I can use Adium and jabber to connect but it’s just not the same.
- eWallet - This is a great little app for managing your passwords and other info in an ecrypted database that can also be accessed on a PDA. I really really really wish there was a Mac version or at least a way to import it into another Mac Password manager.
- mIRC - Why doesn’t any IRC client support mIRC scripts but mIRC? This alone stops me from trying any IRC Client. I have too many custom scripts that I’ve spent too much time refining to ever stop using mIRC.
- ThumbsPlus - Nothing compares to it when it comes to organizing and previewing graphics and photographs. There isn’t any image file format it can’t read.
- Picasa - Support for linux but not Mac?! Come on Google, I’m starting to see a pattern!
- eBay Turbo Lister - A free app provided by eBay that allows you to quickly make professional looking listings and upload them in bulk. With Mac’s market sharing growing as it is, eBay will have to offer a Mac version of it soon!
- UltraVNC - Yes, there other other Mac VNC clients but none support UltraVNC’s encryption plugins so you can connect to your Windows machines securely.
- TiVo.Net or Galleon - Allows you to watch movies and play music from your computer on your TiVo. I use it to watch and listen to video and audio podcasts that iTunes downloads.
- Verizon iobi - An cool application that allows you to access your caller ID and route incoming calls to voice mail or another number in real time. It also allows you to schedule call forwarding in advance.

I like your list of wanted apps but I disagree that some are missing for Mac. Have a look below.
eWallet - There is an App called Wallet for OS X http://www.waterfallsw.com/wallet/ that I use and it works great for storing any sensitive into. Also OS X has a password keychain build into the OS that can be mannaged from Utilities/Keychain Access
ThumbsPlus - There is an App called iView Media that can do the same thing. It can view anything you can throw at it.
Picasa - I am with you a little bit on this one because I use a Windows PC sometimes and I have Picasa. It’s really nice and sometimes it feels faster and than iPhoto. I like iPhoto but I like the way Google does things better. I guess it’s the same as the Google Talk things vs. iChat. Apple needs to take a few tips form Google.
I hope this is helpful.

Some of your “missing apps” just show your newbie status…
Graphic converter by Lemkesoft is THE killer graphic ap for basic hard work. I wish there were an equivalent on the PC.
Try Adium for chat and cross all boundaries.
an idisk will aid in synching and then some.
Why would you want piccassa when you’ve got iphoto. No comparison!
There are turbo lister type softwares available. Since I don’t do bulk ebay though, I can’t say which to look at.
And when are you going to buy apple TV? Alchemy DVR and an Apple TV will make you wish you’d never spent money on Tivo.

As for the UltraVNC problem, just change VNC Server applications…UltraVNC is quite deprecated as well. I use TightVNC on all my machines and the machines i maintain at work and i couldn’t be happier with it.

No sorry, as I stated in my post Adium just isn’t the same. Especially for voice. But, I do use it.
Picasa is compeltely different from iPhoto and while iPhoto certainly does have a few things Picasa doesn’t, Picasa has some features iPhoto lacks.
iDisk has a 1GB limit and it doesn’t continously sync like FolderShare can.
I have an AppleTV but I wouldn’t give up my TiVos.

As for the syncing, I was checking out services like Egnyte. That might do the trick.
I don’t work for them.

As far as eBay Turbo Lister goes, GarageSale http://www.iwascoding.com/GarageSale/) outperforms it at least tenfold. It’s easily the best and most feature rich eBay listing app there is - PC or Mac. Not free, but for $30, you can’t beat it. Give it a look-see!

Winamp?
Re IM. How’s the voice and video interop? iChat working with Gtalk voice was news to me. But then I use Skype all the time.

I’m also a user of Thumbsplus on Windows and I recently got myself a MacBook Pro. I am also looking for a graphics manager like Thumbsplus on OS X. I have tried (still trying) GraphicConvert and iPhoto together with IPhoto Library Manager but they are not really similar in behaviour. The nice thing of Thumbsplus is that you can have multiple databases for different collections of graphics. You can have the database files anywhere you want, as many as you want and there is no real limit to the size. Then you can throw an entire directory tree at it and it will recursively scan all the directories and create thumbnails. Neither GraphicConvert nor iPhoto can do this. How about the product called iView Media? Can this do the things I just mentioned?

I just checked Iview Media Pro. Now there’s only a pro version and it’s quite expensive. Any alternatives?

I use Keychain to store encrypted passwords and notes, it’s only Firefox that I wish used this functionality as Safari does.
For images I use iPhoto, but for viewing ala. ACDSee, IrfanView etc, I use Xee on Mac. Try it out! (The same guy has supremely slick other applications as well… take a look!)
Yea, there is no way I can use voice to any windows gtalk users… iChat only supports voice and video to other iChat people… pity.

I’m currently using Foldershare on my MBP Intel. It seems to look like it’s working but my system has started to become flaky and rebooting from time to time. Is this what you mean by Foldershare not working on OS X Intel machines?

FolderShare encryption doesn’t work and it’s not a Universal build. It must run in compability mode as it was written for the PowerPC. This can create some instability.
