Laptops Should Not Be Used On Your Lap

The BBC is reporting that children should not use laptops on their laps to prevent any dangers that might or might not exist because of the wifi signals emitted.

Since WiFi devices are very lower power, if you don’t use it on your lap you’ll be exposed to only one percent of the radio signals that a cell phone normally transmits while on a call.

Prof Challis added that children are much more sensitive than adults to dangers such as pollutants like lead and UV radiation.

“So if there should be a problem with mobiles, then it may be a bigger problem for children.”

“Since we advise that children should be discouraged from using mobile phones, we should also discourage children from placing their laptop on their lap when they are using wi-fi. “

I agree no one should use a laptop on their lap but not because of any perceived danger of wifi, but rather because of the heat most laptops now produce. Most laptop manufactures don’t even use the word, “laptop” because of this and now prefer to call the devices “notebooks.”

There has been several cases of people that got severe burns due to hot notebooks being placed directly on exposed legs. There is also some concern that this heat can temporarily sterilize men.

Hmmm. I always have my laptop on my lap when i am at class. Never really seems to get too hot. My athlon 64 chip loves heat, but its two fans do a good job.

I spent 18 hours sitting with a lap top on my lap (wearing jeans) and approx 6 hours the following day. My left thigh/knee absorbed most of the heat and now, only two days later , I can’t bear any weight on my left knee - it feels inflamed, sore and hurt like I busted it or something. I cant stand straight on it and am limping around. Could I have shocked myself by using the laptop for too long? Has anyone else ever felt anything like this?

Hey Diane,
I’ve been wondering if this heat has hurt my knees/legs too. I play alot of golf but couldn’t find what I was doing to cause this at this particular point. Doctor said strained knees but I didn’t do anything unusal expect I’ve been using laptop on my lap for last couple months. I have now starte using a pillow or notebook between my HP Presario and my legs and I feel better….not fixed yet but I’m thinking this battery heat is hurting my knees. My left knee is worse and that is the side where the battery is located. ANYONE else have laptop heat hurt knees??

I have been using my laptop to watch pirated movies in bed for 1 week now. I place the laptop on my chest and so my face is almost right up against the LCD screen. I noticed that I’ve been feeling the effects of a cold and had high fever every time I do this. I have a wi-fi connection set up in my bedroom and the only time this happens is when I use it on my chest. Who knows how much radiation I’ve exposed myself to since I have had a headache and fever for about a day and a half now. I definitely don’t have a cold. There is definitely enough radiation to seriously harm a person on most laptops. I even have trouble keeping my balance when I walk because I get dizzy. This is definitely something that can happen to anyone who misuses a laptop and places it too close to their body. I feel that there have not been anough studies into this type of technolofy (wifi, laptop batteries, etc) to truly wigh the negative impacts it has on us. All computer companies care about is pushing their products to increase their profit margins

i really do believe there’s a link between the heat and/or the radiation of the laptop and the aches i’ve been recently feeling. for sometime now i’ve been placing my laptop on my lower abdomen while laying down in bed. however, these past couple of days i noticed that when ever i did place it there my ovaries would start to ache, sort of like menstrual cramps. whenever i would stop using it the pain would go away. i’ve decided to no longer use any part of my body as a desk for my laptop.

damn i’ve suffered from all of the above-i even ended up in hospital because of it..i now wear gloves and place the laptop on a pillow.but can still feel myself going dizzy and end up losing my balance,All my joints in my arm hurt and i get the worst rashes ever..

Yes I have this pain in my knee and it’s only my left (over my battery). I can barely walk now, so I have been not using my laptop directly on my legs. I have a MacBook Pro and it gets so hot that it has burned my legs before as well. Sadly I don’t notice until it’s too late because I have high pain tolerance.

yes, my kness have been killing me. i never had any problems with my knees, ever in my life, until i got my laptop and i feel like the pain is crippling. i can barely walk and i’m feeling quite strongly that is the laptop, because, now my kids are complaining that their knees are hurting.
we can come up with no other explanation.
now, if we are right, now what?
will this go away? has this caused irreversible damage?
PS, I have a macbook pro also and the mac note book. and 2 other mac computers.
someone out there have a solution to the pain?
i’m not going to put the computer on my lap anymore.
is that anyway to check the radioactive waves emitted from the laptops. Thanks for any help, debra
