Unlimited Online Backup For Only $4.95/Month!!

Holy Mozy! Mozy Online Backup is now offering unlimited online backup for Windows and Mac users for only $4.95 per month.

Mozy offers a simple to install client that runs in the background and continuously backups all your data to their servers using an encrypted connection and also encrypts your data securely on their servers. Since the backups are located offsite you can be assured you won’t lose any of your data in case of flood, fire, hurricanes, and other natural disasters.

I signed up the other day and have been very impressed so far. The software has been stable and I was able to limit the amount of bandwidth it’s consuming while it uploads copies of all my data.

I tried Mozy and had many problems, culminating in mozy ceasing to work with no reason whatsoever!
I recommend Beinsync (www.beinsync.com. It is using Amazon S3 and therefore not having the same unreliability issues as Mozy. It also offers 1GB free and actually works well.

Big problem with Mozy is that if you do not backup your config directory under \Program Files\Mozy and you re-install your computer or lose the C: with it on, you lose access to all your files. You will not be able to recover the data. Support told me to delete the computer and do another backup, deleting the computer on Mozy deleted all the files associated with it. Mozy saw the new install as a “new” computer, even with the same name, so no files were listed.

So big tip, you still have to backup your config directory somewhere else to get you Mozy data back.

I’m sorry if you guys have had trouble with Mozy. We are very committed to making Mozy work for you. I’m curious who you spoke with Eric, as you can restore files even if you lose your config folder. (Just don’t delete the machine from your account.)

If you do have any trouble with Mozy or with support, please feel free to contact me directly at chuck@mozy.com. I also encourage you to contact the support team at support@mozy.com

I appreciate the concerns people have about online backup as your data is important to you. We will do everything we can to make sure that your data is safe and available to you should you ever need it.

I’m currently giving Mozy a try and as much as I like the client (I consider it to have rich feature set that actually almost fulfills my needs) I must say that I’ll be giving up soon since I constantly get “Connection Lost” and other types of errors from it.
I’m not able to backup my data this way.
I was able to have 10 GB backed up so far, but it’s been over a month now! This is not good enough for me especially when constantly re-clicking “Backup Now” after each error.
This is terrible.
Also from comments on the net I’m a bit worried if I would actually be able to recover my data (some say there are big delays and problems with dropped connections while restoring).

I would pay twice as much (or even 15$/month) for this type of service to have most of my 250 GB hard drive backed up, but it would have to work reliably.
I don’t want to pay and wonder or worry.

What Do You Think?
