Don’t Trust Microsoft Near Firefox

Microsoft has recently released a Firefox Addon that allows Windows Media to played within the browser. But is this really an attempt at good will or does Microsoft have another motive?
When it suits, of course, Microsoft likes to look like it’s playing nice. Hence the jaunty tone of a recent post on the official Windows Vista blog, announcing that users of Firefox — the biggest threat to Microsoft’s browser share since, well, a decade ago — are now going to be fully allowed into the Windows Media world.
Personally I skip Windows Media Player altogether by using the open source VLC media player.

I commented on this elsewhere on LG. I believe this allows MS to know exactly how many copies of Firefox are being used, without inflation, and I would be completely surprised if the add-on does NOT ‘phone home’ every so often. Besides, it might also be reporting on other things MS feels it needs to know [i.e. Gee whiz, this person isn’t using IE7….hmmmm, could that be because it is impossible for them to do it because they can’t verify the copy of XP?]
I have heard good things about VLC, but I currently use GOM, which works very nicely, also free.

I have been using a Windows Media Player plug in since before Vista was around, I like it. Is the plug in your refering to from microsoft or fire fox? Or are you saying its the same thing?
I could imagine microsoft making a plug in for snoopy purposes, but I think I’ll keep using the plug in till there is some proof and not just anti MS paranoia.

Does it matter? Really as long as media player streams work in Firefox who cares!!
What sucks was the new Netflix watch it online program require IE 7 and media player 11. Then I remember IE Tab for Firefox and now I don’t mine.
