McDonald’s is morphing into Starbucks?

A top McDonald’s executive has told the AP that smoothies, iced coffee and other specialty coffee drinks maybe coming to your local McD’s.
“Our beverages have really been complementary to a sandwich purchase,” he said at a conference sponsored by Bear Stearns in New York. “That’s the space we offer it in. So we are going after destination beverages that attract visits from customers to McDonald’s throughout the day.”
You should also expect to find a new warm “Cinnamon Melt” cinnamon roll with a glaze, by this summer.
Earlier this year there were rumors that McDonald’s franchises were gearing up for all day breakfast as well. It was reported that some franchises were adding new equipment to their locations and the speculation was this was for the all day breakfast. Now it sounds like it might only be for these beverages and maybe some pastries.
I’ve been waiting for all day breakfast since I first heard about it. I’m almost always near a McD’s around 11AM but they’re already done serving eggs by then and it’s still a bit too early for me to consider eating a hamburger or sandwich. If I’m going to splurge and go off my diet, I’d rather reserve those empty calories for diner.
Can McD’s directly compete with Starbucks? I don’t think so. If anything they will only be taking market share from Dunkin’ Donuts. In my opinion Dukin’ Donuts is the one to target. The looks and more importantly the taste of their donuts have declined drastically. Even their coffee isn’t what it used to be.

I wish they’d do an all day breakfast too. Their burgers aren’t worth going for but I still like the breakfast the odd time I’m out early enough on the weekend. I think they are trying to do more to attract adults and people who want something other than their crappy burgers. The sub sandwiches were the first thing they tried and those are good. Still, a lot of bread to them. If they had fancy coffee (and it was actually good!) I would go to McDonalds as much as I’d go to Starbucks at least. My favourite coffee place will still be the Canadian franchises like The Second Cup and Williams though. (I’m in Toronto).
