Your Gmail Address Could Change

If the Independent International Investment Research Group has its way, Google could lose the Gmail name. The group already won the rights to the Gmail trademark in the United Kingdom and is now bringing its fight to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO.)
IIIR wants the USPTO to nullify Google’s ownership of the Gmail trademark; according to reports it would allow Google to continue to use the Gmail.com domain name but would still require that Google call it something else other than Gmail.
At least it sounds like a deal can be made, that is, if Google feels like paying IIIR to go away. I’d hate to even think about changing my Gmail address. While I mostly give out email addresses that use my domain names, I would still have to notify everyone in my Gmail contact list and I don’t think I could reach everyone that potentially has it. What a mess!

Isn’t this the price you pay and the risk you take when you depend on a free e-mail service?

That is the price you pay when you depend on any domain name being safe from someone else declaring they have rights to it. I would argue that there is not a single domain name that is 100% immune.

The GMail trademark, they (IIIR) have been using it in commerce since 2002 so have prior rights.

I think Google has already been calling it Google Mail for some time already.

Quoted from the article link you gave. “…IIIR will not, however ask for transfer of the gmail.com domain, only that Google change the name of its email service.”
Duh people… the domain name (for the uninitiated thats the last part of the email address….the part that spells out gmail.com) will not change.
If they lose this, they will have to ask their artist to draw a new logo, and they will have to do a search and replace on all their webpages… (they will have to search for GMail and replace with GoogleMail)… thats all folks.
Now let talk about something important.
