Hidden Costs of a Windows Vista Upgrade

Preston Gralla of PC World is talking about the hidden costs of upgrading to Windows Vista.

The shiny, new Windows Vista beckons, and an upgrade is mighty tempting. But before you take the plunge, be aware that you may end up forking out a lot more money than just the cost of an operating system upgrade….A lot more than just cash is on the line as well, because you may also spend plenty of time upgrading your hardware to make sure it’s Vista-ready.

Depending on your system specs you might end up spending at least $300 just on hardware; as you may need to replace your graphics card, hard disk, and DVD drive, and add more RAM. Don’t forget about how much time this might take you.

Is it worth the money and time? I don’t think so! There are just not enough benefits and improvements.

If your computer can’t handle Vista its absolutely not worth upgrading to it now. Even if your computer is ready for Vista, you’re better off waiting or reinstalling XP. If you are due for a new computer try to get one with XP, buy a Mac, or try Ubuntu .

CNET has an article pointing out that, for us home users, Microsoft could have put out a simple update for XP in order to get the Vista features that will cost us an arm (for what they are). Vista can wait for me. Probably until they drop support for XP.
