FTC To Look Into ISP Download Speed Claims

Deborah Platt Majoras, Chairwoman of the Federal Trade Commission, is setting her sights on deceptive representations made by Internet Service Providers.

“We will continue our consumer protection work,” FTC chairwoman Deborah Platt Majoras said, “by, for example, holding Internet service providers accountable for any false or deceptive representations to consumers concerning the nature of the Internet access provided.”

Comcast has been making news on Digg and Techmeme for alegedly cutting off customers for downloading too much. But, Comcast advertises the service as unlimited! When comcast is asked how much is too much they won’t really tell you.

Comcast does not state a bandwidth limit becuase there is no set limit. The terms of service states that customers can use as much bandwidth as they want as long as it does not affect the quality of service of other customers in their area. Furthermore, it would take a very greedy person to actually use so much bandwidth that it would slow others down and Comcast would not disconnect anyone’s service without contacting them first.
