I recently had my first performance review and survived. Actually, I more than just survived, I enjoyed it. I attribute this mainly to the fact that I have a really great manager.
I have regular one-one meeting with my manager throughout the year. In addition, she always takes the opportunity to provide me with feedback and coaching in areas where I’m still developing. This means that nothing came as a surprise to me during the performance review. It was basically a summary of everything we talked about throughout the year with additional focus on my objectives for the upcoming year and potential development areas. As a result, my performance review was a positive experience.
Unfortunately, I know many people who go into their performance reviews blind because they have no idea what their manager is thinking with regards to their performance. This is due to the fact that their managers failed to provide regular feedback on performance. The result is a performance review from hell which looks something like this.
