LG and Dolby Labs have announced that soon there will be LG phones with 5.1 surround sound. Just the ticket when you are listening to those ultra high quality mp3s on the quarter inch speakers of the phone!
LG Electronics, the third-largest mobile phone maker, and Dolby Laboratories, are showcasing at the Mobile World Congress 5.1 multichannel surround sound on a smartphone using the latest version of Dolby Mobile technology and an LG Android-based device.
Dolby Mobile has been designed to enhance the audio experience on the move through a combination of multiple features, including the Dolby Digital Plus decoder and Mobile Surround technology, which enable full 5.1-channel HD audio.
“As a leader in the mobile industry, LG is devoted to delivering the best new features to our customers for a better user experience. Today’s announcement represents the latest milestone in joint efforts to improve the performance of our handsets, including feature phones and smartphones,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Together with Dolby, we hope to raise the bar for audio quality in mobile devices and the mobile industry as a whole.”

Perhaps this will find a good use, but other than as an exercise to show that it can be done, i remain unconvinced. (BTW, where does the subwoofer go? implant perhaps?)
