Some would say this is simply a reaction based upon many, many years of Soviet paranoia, but as the saying goes, “Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean that they are not out to get you”.
A notion from slashdot give us a clue that the Russians may be much more forward looking, and potentially more prepared, than any of the countries of the West, that are typically portrayed as more aware and responsive.
“Roscosmos, Russia’s Federal Space Agency, will start working on a project to save planet Earth from a possible collision with Asteroid Apophis, which may happen in 2036. NASA specialists believe that the collision is extremely unlikely. Russian specialists will choose the strategy and then invite the world’s leading space agencies to join the project.”
Not to sound too dire, but if the Republicans are in office at the decision time, they will probably not think it is worth being concerned about, because after all, it’s much more important to be able to count your money than have anything left in the world to spend it on.
On the other hand, it will make for an excellent opportunity to make a sequel to Armageddon. Hollywood will love it!
