Just about every day I hear about games like Call of Duty, Halo or other first person shooter games. I have tried these games but to be honest, they make me sick. I don’t mean I dislike them, I mean they make me physically ill. The first person perspective on a computer has a negative effect on me. I get dizzy and nauseous, not to mention I can never remember where I am or how to get back where I came from. If there is an option to use 3rd person (see your characters as if you were following them) I am fine.
I tend to go for RTS (Real Time Strategy) when I play a computer game. Command and Conquer, Age of Empires, Ago of Mythology, Sim City and others are titles I have in my library. One of my first RTS gaming experiences was Dune 2000, released by Westwood Studios in 1998. In this game the object mirrors the movie. Your goal is to harvest spice while avoiding the sand worms and defeating the other “Houses.” As the game progresses you eventually terraform the desert planet into a lush, water filled world. Like most strategy games, you complete the goals by assigning units to specific tasks, in this case mining spice, building power plants and manufacturing military units for defense and offence, etc.
Other RTS games, like Age of Empires require you to create basic workers to harvest raw materials like wood, stone, gold and food. Once these units are assigned, they continue to do the assigned task until you tell them otherwise. This allows you to create other units such as military without having to micro-manage.
I’ve never been real good at playing these games but they are my favorites. When playing online I regularly get beat, usually within the first 30 minutes and by some 12 year old kid. Regardless, this is my genre of choice for the computer.
