DNA Testing for the Athletic Ability

It has become an accepted part of the academic landscape that athletic ability can translate into a free university education. A professional contact in almost any sport is a guarantee of financial security for life, given a few money management skills. The games of adolescence can translate into limitless wealth. Now, with the advancement of DNA technology, some parents are seeking a clue to see if their child has the ‘right stuff’ in terms of genetics:

“Hundreds of sports-loving parents have latched on to genetic testing to determine if their children have the makings of great athletes. And now the word has spread – to English football clubs.”

Perhaps, if the child has the DNA possibilities to be an athlete, then the parent could focus on offering that child all the opportunities to excel. It would be taking what nature has offered and nurturing a future professional athlete.

Should parents avail themselves of this information? Will that young toddler grow up and have a great mid-range jump shot? Does that child have the possibility of re-writing Tiger Woods’ golf achievements? Will that little girl have a devastating serve and cross-court backhand?

Would you, as a parent, even want to know? – Perhaps as the child is being offered all those opportunities to be that professional athlete, attention is diverted from that youngster becoming a terrific biologist, musician, poet…
