Last quarter, AMD did something it has never done since its inception. With sales of 1.6 billion dollars in the third quarter, the company has found its way into the top ten of chip manufacturers.
The fact that this is now occurring underscores the David and Goliath position, of AMD with respect to Intel. The Intel dollar figure at 9.2 billion dollars is almost 6 times that which was posted by AMD, and almost twice what the second place finisher, Samsung posted.
The fact that AMD is in the top ten also belies the fact that the company is bleeding red, having not turned a profit in several quarters. On the plus side, the company is getting closer to that magic black line.
Since the volume is up, it will be interesting how many more places the company will move up the list, as it struggles to profitability.
