I’m constantly reminded why Portland is the best city in the world to live. In just 1.5 hours, you can be at Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood or head the other direction and visit the Oregon Coast. I recently took my family for a little weekend getaway to the Oregon Coast. We stayed at Tolovana Inn just south of downtown Cannon Beach. We were all pleased with the quality of the grounds, main lodge, and especially the rooms. We opted for an ocean front suite which was perfect when the weather was windy and blustery, typical for the Oregon Coast in October (and throughout most of the year). It comfortably slept two couples and a 2 year old (although I believe we could sleep as many as 8). Amenities like a gas fireplace, two baths, Murphy bed, TV with DVD player in all rooms and fully equipped kitchen make for a comfortable stay that few Oregon Coast hotels can touch. We did get a few hours of beach time in the sun, and enjoyed the pool and hot tub when the weather was less than ideal. We had a fantastic dinner at Bill’s Tavern. The former dive bar is now a microbrewery and the cuisine was surprisingly gourmet for the price. The clam chowder, in particular, was a pleasant surprise for my Yankee wife. We ate the rest of our meals in the comfort of our suite, enjoying the sound of the waves breaking and breathtaking view. We can’t wait to visit again, especially considering the off-season rates making Tolovana Inn a tremendous value.
