The U.S. Women scored three unanswered goals against England and advances to the semifinals. The semifinals will be held on September 27, in Hangzhou, China. It will be either against Australia or highly touted Brazil.
The game against England was again a slow start for the American women. It seems that the early minutes of a match are the unsteadiest moments for the American team. The goal production was from Abby Wambach, Shannon Boxx and Kristine Lilly. Again, the U.S. women were solid on defense and limited England’s chances. The defense was quietly stellar and turned back attacks with great spacing and positioning. It allowed Hope Solo, the U.S. goalie, to record her third shutout of the tournament.
And kudos to a local drinking establishment that is opening in the early hours of the morning to show the games on their multiple television screens. No alcohol is served at that hour but they do have a continuing breakfast and seem to have endless amounts of hot coffee. The place is packed – completely full. There are soccer fans here – and I need a nap. These early morning games played in China are creating very sleepy soccer fans.
