AT&T subsidiary AT&T Alascom has announced the availability of WiMax broadband service for residents of Juneau, Alaska. The service will start at $19.95 per month and is a welcome addition to the Alaska landscape, which doesn’t always lend itself to conventional technology.
Alaska, the last frontier, is huge and has large areas of difficult terrain, which would be a nightmare to get connected with standard phone lines or cable. In Juneau alone, the separation of areas of the city proper by mountains, water, and hundreds of islets would keep either standard technology busy full time with build outs and upkeep.
Delta Junction, Petersburg, and Aniak are also among the expected deployments, which will feature up to 1Mbps up and down speeds.
