Insomnia problems? Long nights tossing and turning? There is hope, whether your situation is long term or temporary, there are quite a few natural options for taking care of your sleeplessness. Temporary insomnia is most often caused from stress, environmental changes, or even excitement.
For temporary insomnia, here are some basic solutions:
*Chamomile: We are not talking about tea bags here, which have been processed, and have lost most of their essential oils. Buy high quality bulk chamomile from the bulk section of your grocery or health food store. Take a small hand full(about 1/4 cup), and throw in a small pot of water brought to a boil. Turn off, and let sit for about 10 minutes. Strain, and drink. Excessive amounts can lead to hallucinations, so be careful! This is just about guaranteed to knock you out, unless you have a more long term issue.
*Melatonin: This one should only be taken on rare occasions, and never on a regular basis. Start with a low dosage, between 125-250 mg. per dose. Many brands come in too high of a dose, about 500 mg.; in this case break into smaller pieces to get a lower dose. 250 mg. should knock most people out cold. Do not take if you are pregnant, nursing, have auto immune problems or severe allergies, hyper-thyroid, have severe mental illness, taking steroid medications or MAO inhibitors, or suffer from epilepsy.
*Valerian: This herb is great for stress, or to help you sleep better at night. Take 300 to 400 mg. in capsule form one hour before bed. This herb has a pretty good safety record, but never over use any medicinal substance, whether it is natural or otherwise.
Remember also to not eat 2-3 hours before bed, drink plenty of water for several hours before going to sleep, and limit physical activity one hour before bedtime. Say hello to the sandman for me!
