The principal, Catherine Stephens, says the incident “involved poor judgment.” It seems to have involved gross stupidity:
“MURFREESBORO, Tennessee (AP) — Staff members of an elementary school staged a fictitious gun attack on students during a class trip, telling them it was not a drill as the children cried and hid under tables.
The mock attack Thursday night was intended as a learning experience and lasted five minutes during the weeklong trip to a state park, said Scales Elementary School Assistant Principal Don Bartch, who led the trip.”
I had this article reviewed by two of the local law professors. Their comments were that threats such as this, regardless of intent, can be classified as “assault.” If one implies harm, with or without a weapon being shown, that is assault.
I have no idea what the legal statutes are in Tennessee but one thing is evident. These educators violated the trust of these children. In light of the recent headlines from Virginia Tech, this behaviour is barbaric.
*** The irony is the Ms. Stephens is a graduate of Virginia Tech – Class of 1989.
