University of California at San Diego Computers Hacked, UCSD Students and Staff Compromised

The University of California at San Diego announced this week that hackers have again broken into their computer system, compromising the personal data of thousands of UCSD students, staff, and faculty. The UCSD machines which the hackers accessed contained the trifecta payload of social security numbers, drivers license numbers, and credit card numbers. Everything that today’s savvy identity thief could ask for.

However, while announced last week, the break-in did not actually occur last week. It occured in April, more than two months ago.

According to reports, UCSD explained the delay in notifying those compromised on the “‘time-consuming’ process of determining its scope.” Said UCSD spokesperson Dolores Davies, “The reality is that whole . . . process is cumbersome and takes time…
