An (Almost) Brief History of Linux

Ever wonder how your favorite operating system came to be? Look no further than this essay by Ragib Hasan. It covers the inspiration of MINIX, Linus’s initial post to a MINIX newsgroup, and on through the development process. We also learn Linus’s middle name is Benedict, and see how far Linux has come (which, admittedly, many of us are already experiencing).

Incidentally, if you’ve ever wondered how to pronounce Linux properly, check out ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/Linux/PEOPLE/Linus/SillySounds/. As the names suggest, one’s in English and the other Swedish. Most folks agree there’s no single correct pronunciation, but there you go. Personally, I lean toward “Linnix” while a co-worker prefers “Lienix”.

PoTAYto, poTAHto… you know how it goes.
