Regardless of how you learn, you have to WANT TO learn.
Part of it is the teacher’s ability to communicate and keep you interested. If you’re not getting it, tell him. If that doesn’t help, find a different teacher.
But practice. Lots.
Practice your lessons plus whatever else you want to play.
It will become second nature in time.
P.S. Pick up the guitar the way it feels natural to you, just like picking up a pencil. If you’re a lefty and you want to play that way, don’t let anybody tell you different. If it were that difficult, I wouldn’t have been playing for 30 years or have as many guitars as I do.
